soups and homemade bread

Going a little lazy on the photo up there, I clipped one from the Internet.
A friend brought us a loaf of zucchini bread, a quart of greens and three different soups yesterday: pasta e fagioli, chili and chicken noodle. This is a friend who knows what to do for you when you’re floundering. With every taste, H kept saying, “Maria is old school.” I think he meant that she cooks like our mothers’ generation, but who knows? His eyes were rolling back in their sockets at the time, and he had this strange, beatific smile on his face.
The rain continues and I need to walk a little. I’ll give it a try if it clears for ten or fifteen minutes today. This body has been dormant for so long. I’m afraid it will not even know what to do.
Coming back!

Now THAT is an awesome friend! Maybe “old school” means still remembering to be kind, which would be a sad state for “new school.” Doesn’t really matter — she is amazing and her food sounds even better! (And you are granted permission from the great internet critiquers to be a photo slacker! The bread looks awfully good!
Glad you are able to get out and walk — it’s too cold here to do that today. And every day is a little better. Welcome back to the world, my friend!
I spoke too soon about the walking. It was so cold and wet here today. That raw kind of cold that goes to the bone. I’m not quite ready to exercise to my walking DVD. Soon though.
That’s a great friend! Take your time getting your strength back…don’t overdo!
No, no. Will not overdo. Promise.
Be careful about walking by yourself until you really are getting your strength back. You don’t want to get too far away from the house and not be able to get back. Of course, there’s that cul-de-sac thing. That helps. Walk in a circle for a while!
My friend with the broken leg and broken arm’s back home. I took her some goodies on Monday – butternut squash soup, some sliced ham and already prepared sweet potato casserole, stuff like that. Chili, too. She’s getting by ok. Next Monday she goes back to the orthopedic surgeon to see how the leg’s coming. The arm’s good, and she can get around with a walker. I was going to loan her mom’s, but that one didn’t have wheels or a basket. So, I went out and got her a brand new one. It’s cherry red, with big wheels and a nice basket. Once she’s done with it, I’ll put it under the bed until the next one of us needs it.
Here’s a little walkin’ music for you!
Loved the video. LOL
I couldn’t walk today. I think I wanted to so I told myself that I would, but it’s too cold and wet here. The rain will not stop and I think we’re getting more of the same tomorrow. I have to remind myself that it is January and sunny days are not guaranteed.
What a great friend you are. I know how much your friend appreciated your thoughtfulness. We really do need to take care of each other. It’s important. I’ve heard that people often fare better with walkers than canes – something about the shoulder/spine or something going a little lopsided with the cane. I hope your friend does well.
Oh, and I will not walk by myself. Oh, no. Not ready for that. Just ten or fifteen minutes if the rain will only stop.
I need to learn to make some more soups is what this post just informed me.
Ha! Yes, they are so good and good for you. I should freeze them. Then I’d always have some, but we always eat every drop.
Soups and casseroles, that’s where it’s at! Walking. Yeah…I need to do that. I am glad you’re feeling better, and at least considering it. Take it slow and easy!
